Scripture Reading:
#1. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 124:8)
#2. Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD! Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the LORD! (Psalm 134:1-2)
Prayer of Praise to God: Heavenly Father, we lift up our hands and our voices to your praises. You are the only true God; there are no others before you. We pray that you receive all the glory that is rightfully yours. We thank you for creating faith in our dead hearts. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
V1. The mighty God, the Lord,
hath spoken unto all;
from rising to the setting sun,
he unto earth doth call.
From Zion, his own hill,
where perfect beauty dwells,
Jehovah hath his glory shown,
in brightness that excels.
V2. Our God shall surely come,
and silence shall not keep;
before him fire shall waste, and storms
tempestuous round him sweep.
He to the heav’ns above
shall then send forth his call,
and likewise to the earth, that he
may judge his people all.
V3. Together let my saints
unto me gathered be,
those that by sacrifice have made
a covenant with me.
Then shall the heav’ns declare
his righteousness abroad;
because the Lord himself is judge,
yea, none is judge, but God.
Reading of the Law: For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him (1 John 3:11-15)
Silent Confession of Sin/Confession of Sin: Our Heavenly Father, have mercy on us according to your steadfast love and abundant mercy. We confess that we have sinned in doing evil and by leaving undone what is pleasing in your sight. We have been quick to do evil, and slow to do good. Our sin is ever before us. We repent, O Lord, knowing that you are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Create in us clean hearts, and renew a right spirit with us. Help us to hate our sin, give strength to our wills, and cause us to walk in your ways. Amen.
Reading of the Gospel: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3)

Question #12
Q. According to God’s righteous judgment we deserve punishment both now and in eternity: how then can we escape this punishment and return to God’s favor?
A. God requires that his justice be satisfied. Therefore the claims of this justice must be paid in full, either by ourselves or by another.
Question #13
Q. Can we make this payment ourselves?
A. Certainly not. Actually, we increase our debt every day.
Question #14
Q. Can another creature—any at all—pay this debt for us?
A. No. To begin with, God will not punish any other creature for what a human is guilty of. Furthermore, no mere creature can bear the weight of God’s eternal wrath against sin and deliver others from it.
Question #15
Q. What kind of mediator and deliverer should we look for then?
A. One who is a true and righteous human, yet more powerful than all creatures, that is, one who is also true God.

Bible Reading and Commentary:
Read: 1 Corinthians 2:6-16
In this section Paul insists that God’s glorious plan of salvation through Jesus Christ so defies human wisdom that only spiritual people, those indwelt by the Holy Spirit, are able to comprehend it. Most Protestant commentators emphasize that the phrase “spiritual persons” refers to all Christians in general, that is, those who have been reconciled to God through faith and have received the Holy Spirit, who makes known to them the hidden wisdom of God. This view would be in contrast to the Catholic view of “spiritual persons” referring to someone who holds an office in the church. Whereas spiritual persons understand the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection, unregenerate “natural persons” continue to despise Christ and his cross because they trust in their human wisdom and natural affections.
This negatively affects our ability to evangelize in our day. Most unbelievers and even many Christians understand Christianity to be about subjective feelings not about objective truths. Christ’s incarnation, life, death and resurrection are true facts grounded in history. Whatever feelings we have is because the truth affects us internally. Our knowledge of our own salvation is not something we feel but something we know to be true based on the truth of Scripture. Yes, this should produce an emotional response. It will do us well to remember that Christianity is based on historical facts found in the very Word of God. Christianity is true not because I believe it to be true but because it is true. In our age of relativity we hear people say “it may be true for you but not for me” and that in itself is a false statement. No matter what Pilate or what one of our Presidents said the fact is truth is truth.
The Holy Spirit not only reveals heavenly wisdom but also applies Christ’s salvation to believers by assuring them that they are justified before God and secure as God’s beloved children. The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:14 “And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” If Jesus had not been resurrected that Easter Sunday then he has not risen in your heart.
As we have seen, a huge gap exists between Christian and non-Christian thinking. Realizing this fact helps us understand why it is that God must grant us understanding of spiritual things. If not, the cross will remain foolish to us. This is why a true understanding of the gospel must be revealed to us by God, since the gospel can never be discovered by human wisdom. If the Corinthians fail to grasp this point, the church in Corinth will continue to struggle with the same kind of issues facing them: schism and division, sexual immorality, lawsuits, and improper conduct in worship.
Therefore, if we are in Christ, we are indwelt by the Spirit of God. Therefore, we have the mind of Christ. This is why we are to look for the wisdom of God and a demonstration of the Spirit’s power precisely in those places where we are weakest. This is why Christianity will always remain foolish to a Greek and a stumbling block to Jews. God reveals his wisdom and power in the cross, that message through which the Spirit of God demonstrates his power. But this means giving up much of what we hold dear and what we prefer. It also means admitting that God’s ways are right and ours are wrong, and this is never easy.
Philip Melanchthon: “but we have the mind of Christ”: He [the Holy Spirit] made us believe the gospel, which otherwise offends the sanctimonious and is mocked by the wise. Because we know Christ, we know the will of the Father in Christ. And knowing the will of the Father we can judge spiritually concerning God’s works both within us and outside us. For Christ is displayed before us as a sort of exemplar or mirror in which we can contemplate both the image of sin and the image of life. In his [Jesus] dying we see the wrath of God toward sin. In his coming back to life, we see his mercy. . . and so Christ is the image of his [the Father’s] will.
Closing Hymn: The Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
Closing Scripture: But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. (2 Peter 3:18)
The Lord’s Prayer (together): Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
